Much of the fungal world exists unseen beneath our feet.
Fine fungal threads called hyphae form networks of mycelium throughout healthy soils and decomposing organic matter. Some fungi form mycorrhizal relationships with plants, exchanging soil resources with their hosts in return for carbon compounds produced through photosynthesis [REF].
Fungi are particularly important in the decomposition of woody materials. They also contribute to soil aggregation, nutrient cycling and the movement of resources through soil. Repeated intensive soil disturbance can disrupt fungal networks.
Our response is to create conditions favourable to fungal activity: living roots; minimal unnecessary cultivation; mature compost; woody mulch; diverse vegetation; organic matter; and protection from excessive heat and drying.
Fungi are the hidden architects of the living soil.
