Plants do not simply take from soil. They also feed it. Through photosynthesis, plants capture atmospheric carbon and use sunlight to manufacture carbon compounds. Some of this carbon moves below ground through roots and root exudates, supporting microorganisms around the rhizosphere [REF].
Carbon moves continually through plants, animals, microorganisms and soil. It helps build organic matter. Organic matter supports soil structure. Healthy structure improves water behaviour. Biological activity cycles nutrients.
We describe carbon as the currency of life. Carbon is also stored sunlight. Every leaf represents solar energy captured and invested in life.
