Grazing and browsing animals have influenced terrestrial ecosystems for millions of years. They consume vegetation, recycle nutrients, disperse seeds, disturb soil and influence plant communities. Within the Monchique Stewardship System, livestock are therefore not regarded simply as production units. They are ecological participants.
This does not mean that animals automatically regenerate land. Poorly managed livestock can cause enormous damage. The ecological value comes from management.
